| « | Globalement, je pense que ce travail est un peu plus intime et personnel. Nous sommes en train de raconter une histoire humaine, pas une histoire de cyborg. Ce n'est pas un space opera, mais une histoire qui prend place sur Terre dans une ville. Bien que le joueur soit habitué à camper plusieurs personnages, il doit cette fois se sentir comme une personne qui découvre le mystère qui se cache derrière les ruines de la Nouvelle Mombasa. La bande originale de Halo 3 : ODST a été composée par Martin O'Donnell et Michael Salvatori pour Halo 3 : ODST.
Description
Par rapport aux autres jeux, Halo 3 : ODST est un projet sensiblement différent, autant dans le développement (pensé au début comme simple extension pour Halo 3, pour finalement aboutir à un jeu commercialisé en version boite) que dans l'approche musicale. Pour ce jeu, O'Donnell et Salvatori ont décidé de laisser de côté tous les thèmes d'Halo précédemment composés. En effet, Bungie prit l'initiative de changer de protagoniste (un soldat à l'aspect beaucoup plus vulnérable que le Major) et de cadre (une ville dans la nuit occupée par les Covenants), afin d'aboutir à une atmosphère plus sombre et moins grandiloquente. De ce fait, O'Donnell a alors composé dans un style alliant le jazz au classique du XXe siècle avec passages aux percussions afin de faire ressortir une ambiance dite film noir. La direction musicale, pour le moins inattendue, a d'ailleurs fait l'objet de nombreuses éloges et est considérée par certains comme l'un des meilleurs travaux de O'Donnell, ce qui été le cas car il a remporté le prix de l'année 2009 de la meilleure musique de jeux vidéo.
